What Your Job Will Be Like:

Do you have a curiosity about research in advanced polymeric and organic materials? We may have the challenge you are looking for! We are seeking a hard-working postdoctoral appointee to join our team of organic chemist/polymer scientists. Work with an outstanding team using a range of techniques to design key properties of organic materials and composites for National Security Programs. The applicant should be familiar with and be able to perform multi-step organic synthesis, have experience with polymerization methodologies and characterize the materials they create through analytical techniques (e.g., NMR, FTIR, GPC, DSC, TGA, rheology, DMA, TMA, etc.).

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Synthesis of molecules and polymers with designed-in functionality and/or targeted properties.
  • Materials characterization, including thermal analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, thermomechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, NMR, FTIR, Raman, XPS, SEM, GPC, and rheological testing
  • Mechanical testing, including the use of universal testing machines to complete both (1) standard measurements such as modulus, fracture toughness, and strength of materials/structures and (2) innovative test designs to resolve questions about materials or complex structures
  • Nanocomposite formulating, including optimization of compounding procedures, particle loading, and particle surface modifications.
  • Epoxy formulating and testing (mechanical, thermal, electrical properties, cure kinetics, rheology) with filled and unfilled systems
  • Mission needs may require using conventional instrumentation in unconventional manners, augmenting existing instrumentation, or developing new apparatus and/or accessories
  • Basic lab and equipment maintenance and safety paperwork

This position will require working with organizations across SNL as well as working with technologists, students, and post-docs in the group. You'll work in groups and independently to solve research and development problems and develop new technologies and tackle applied problems related to national security. You will have leadership responsibilities with respect to working with customers, reporting results, publishing papers, attending conferences, and participating in and leading program meetings.

Qualifications We Require:
  • Possess, or near completion of, a PhD in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or similar field, and possess a bachelor's degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM)
  • Experience in organic and/or polymer synthesis and characterization
  • Proven record of technical experience, evidenced by professional publications and presentations
  • Experience with small molecule and polymeric materials characterization and mechanical testing, including thermal analysis techniques (e.g., differential scanning calorimetry, thermomechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis), and NMR, FTIR, Raman, XPS, SEM, GPC, and/or rheological testing
  • Able to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:
  • Dedication to laboratory safety
  • Experience in designing degradable chemistries, especially in areas toward sustainable chemistries
  • Experience in performing and evaluating polymeric materials aging and related mechanisms
  • Ability to work independently and in teams
  • Ability and interest to work on both basic R&D and applied problem-solving programs involving organic materials
  • Solid communication and interpersonal skills for explaining the meaningful aspects of technical work to coworkers and customers
  • Active DOE or DoD security clearance

About Our Team:

The Organic Materials Science Department researches and develops new and advanced materials and processing strategies to meet a wide range of specialized applications in nuclear weapons, national security and industrial applications. Our department is dedicated to scientific discovery, creativity, innovation and practical solutions for our diverse customers. The department specializes in aging science and predictive performance of polymers, synthetic organic and polymer chemistry, thermal, mechanical, chemical, and physical characterization of organic materials, and advanced manufacturing of polymers. We perform reliability studies for polymers with an emphasis on understanding degradation mechanisms, structure-property relationships, and performance margins. Current areas of R&D in the department include: developing novel encapsulant materials, creating new thermoset chemistries for additive manufacturing, developing innovative NMR techniques to understand transport phenomena in polymers, measuring and optimizing electrical performance of polymer dielectrics, elucidating the interdependency of chemical change and polymer physics over long timeframes, creating reversible and degradable chemistries, understanding polymer interfacial properties and adhesion, measuring and predicting radiation effects on polymers, monitoring of reactive thermoset cure kinetics, and quantifying permeation behavior and spatially dependent degradation processes. We perform a complete spectrum of chemical, structural, thermal, rheological, and mechanical characterization of polymeric materials that must perform over 30 - 40 year lifetimes.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. Position Information:

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
